BOOK LOVERS by Emily Henry
(first published: May 12, 2022; Publisher: Penguin; 377 pages, Paperback; Goodreads Choice Award for Romance 2022; Swoon Award for Contemporary Romance 2022)
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4.5/5)
(read book: June 5, 2024)
I’m a huge fan and admirer of Emily Henry’s work. And I love her books, well the ones I’ve read so far. In my rankings, “Happy Place” claims the top spot, followed by “Book Lovers” in second place, and “Beach Read” in third. Her novels bring a breath of fresh air, evoking a mix of excitement and joy, along with deep emotions, making my reading experiences truly special. Emily Henry’s brilliance shines through in her writing, which comes as no surprise considering her popularity. Her worldwide success truly speaks volumes.
This book is perfect for a book lover like me. It was also quite surprising to come across the fictional, fictional (yes: double fictional) character Nadine Winters. Even though the character was depicted somewhat negatively, I found it quite intriguing to see my name mentioned so frequently which doesn’t happen often let me tell you that. It’s not a very common name. But let’s delve into that a bit further down the line.
Nora & Charlie: From Rivals to Lovers
One of the best tropes in the world of romance novels is when enemies become friends, become lovers. Don’t you agree?! It always works, doesn’t it? Like ALWAYS. I won’t get tired of reading these types of novels. Even though I’m aware that the protagonists will eventually find courage to conquer their inner struggles and fears, uniting as lovers in the end, the story never fails to captivate me. NEVER!
Nora Stephens is a fierce and ambitious literary agent who lives and breathes the bustling city life. She’s the best in her field. One could say in a cut-throat kind of style. Well, that’s how she got to where she is now. And she’s passionate about her job and does everything for her clients: she gets the best deals for them, but is there ever a minute that she takes off for herself? How about some boundaries, Nora? A vacation maybe…?
She’s got the money, the apartment, the career: one thing, though, Nora is not so good at is love, the romantic kind of love.
After a particularly intense breakup years ago, she built up walls to protect herself. And since then, she has avoided getting emotionally close to anyone as she sees vulnerability as too risky. I think we can all sympathize with that in one way or another. And trust me if you grab a copy of this book and get to the part how she got dumped you would totally understand why she never really recovered from that.
But how much does she let the ghosts of the past direct her life? Will she learn how to trust again? Well, I guess if you’re reading this you already know. Of course there has to be something that changes the trajectory.
And this is where her little sister Libby comes in; worried about her sister’s life style, Libby has the perfect idea to get Nora out of workaholic mode by convincing her to spend some quality sister time away from the city in a quaint town straight out of a romance novel called Sunshine Falls, in North Carolina, far away from bustling NYC.
And this is where Nora meets Charlie Lastra again, an editor from the city whom she doesn’t particularly like. What does her nemesis do in Sunshine Falls and what are the chances they both meet at this place at the exact same time!?
Oh, the thrill of romance novels! This is where it gets exciting and really juicy. As fate brings them together, they find themselves collaborating on a project. Of course! 😉
That’s the moment when they must confront their past wounds and limitations, and discover how to let their guards down.
How they manage to do that is something I’d love for you to explore, as I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise. But trust me it’s a good one!
Much More than a Love Story
Book Lovers is more than just a love story. It’s a celebration of sisterhood, self-discovery, and the power of stories to shape our lives. Henry’s writing is as sharp as ever, with dialogue that sparkles and prose that flows effortlessly. She has a remarkable talent for blending humor with emotional depth, making you laugh one moment and tugging at your heartstrings the next.
Henry’s love for the written word shines through on every page, making this a must-read for anyone who has ever found solace, joy, or escape in a good (romance) book.
Book Lovers is comforting as it is exhilirating. It’s a book that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page, leaving you with a smile on your face and a longing for more. If you’re looking for a romance that is smart, funny, and utterly enchanting, Book Lovers is an absolute must-read.
Some of my favorite quotes:
“Maybe love shouldn’t be built on a foundation of compromises, but maybe it can’t exist without them either. Not the kind that forces two people into shapes they don’t fit in, but the kind that loosens their grips, always leaves room to grow. Compromises that say, there will be a you-shaped space in my heart, and if your shape changes, I will adapt. No matter where we go, our love will stretch out to hold us, and that makes me feel like … like everything will be okay.”
“I’m not ashamed of my upbringing, but the more you tell a person about yourself, the more power you hand over.”
“Even if it hurts, when he shimmers across my mind, it’s like remembering a favorite book. One that left you gutted, sure, but also one that changed you forever”
“I read once that sunflowers always orient themselves to face the sun. That’s what being near Charlie Lastra is like for me. There could be a raging wildfire racing toward me from the west and I’d still be straining eastward toward his warmth.”
“Just because not everyone gets you doesn’t mean you’re wrong.”
“Some books you don’t read so much as live, and finishing one of those always makes me think of ascending from a scuba dive. Like if I surface too fast I might get the bends.”
“You’re a fighter,” he says. “When you care about something, you won’t let anything fucking touch it. I’ve never met anyone who cares as much as you do. Do you know what most people would give to have someone like that in their life?”
THE DEAD ROMANTICS by Ashley Poston
(first published: June 28, 2024; Publisher: Berkley; 368 pages, Paperback; Swoon Award for PNR/UF Romance 2022)
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)
(read book: June 8, 2024)
What can I say?!? – I love, love, love this novel. That’s my favorite kind of genre!!! Praise to Ashley Poston!
“The Dead Romantics” is a spellbinding novel that masterfully weaves together the magic of love and the ethereal allure of the supernatural. With its perfect blend of romance, humor, and magic realism, this book is a heartwarming and utterly unique tale that will enchant readers from start to finish. Woohoo! It’s the best! Like “The Seven Year Slip“ I cannot get enough of these stories. Please, Ashley, never ever stop writing! I’m your biggest fan. 😀
Florence and her Ghost!
The story follows Florence Day, a ghostwriter for a bestselling romance author who has a serious case of writer’s block. (Oh gosh, I know this feeling all too well!)
After a painful breakup, Florence has lost her belief in love and, consequently, her ability to write about it. To make matters worse, her new editor, Benji Andor, refuses to grant her an extension on her latest manuscript. Florence is on the verge of despair when she receives devastating news: her beloved father has passed away. Reluctantly, she returns to her small hometown, a place she left behind years ago, burdened by memories and family expectations.
What makes Florence’s story so captivating is her unique relationship with the supernatural. She’s not just any romance writer—Florence can see and communicate with ghosts, a gift she inherited from her father. Growing up in a funeral home, this ability was both a blessing and a curse, setting her apart and making her feel like an outsider. However, it’s this connection to the afterlife that becomes central to the novel’s plot and its magical realism.
As Florence navigates her grief and the challenges of returning to her hometown, she is unexpectedly visited by the ghost of none other than Benji Andor, her tough-as-nails editor. Benji, charming and frustrating in life, is just as compelling in death. His ghostly presence is a mystery—why is he here, and why is he so invested in helping Florence rediscover her belief in love? As they spend time together, sparks fly, and Florence finds herself falling for a man who is literally out of reach.
The romance between Florence and Benji is beautifully crafted, filled with tender moments, witty banter, and a deep emotional connection that transcends the boundaries of life and death.
Like in “The Seven Year Slip”, Poston expertly balances the whimsy and warmth of their relationship with the poignant exploration of grief, loss, and healing. The supernatural elements are seamlessly integrated into the narrative, adding a layer of magic that enhances the love story without overshadowing it.
Love in all its Forms
One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its portrayal of love in all its forms—romantic, familial, and self-love. Florence’s journey is as much about reconnecting with her family and coming to terms with her father’s death as it is about finding love again. The small-town setting, with its quirky characters and close-knit community, adds depth to the story, making Florence’s return home feel like a true emotional homecoming.
As Florence and Benji’s story unfolds, the novel delves into themes of forgiveness, acceptance, and the courage to embrace life’s uncertainties. The resolution is both unexpected and deeply satisfying. I love how Poston tied the threads of love, loss, and the supernatural all together so perfectly, in a way that feels earned and true to the characters.
And trust me, by the end when the story’s direction was apparent, I released a deep sigh of relief. Thank you so much, Ashely Poston, for this outstanding reading experience!
A Hauntingly Beautiful Blend of Romance and Magic
Ashley Poston’s writing is nothing short of magical. Her prose is lyrical yet accessible, drawing readers into a world where ghosts walk among the living, and love is powerful enough to transcend even death. The dialogue is sharp and often laugh-out-loud funny, while the more poignant moments are handled with grace and sensitivity.
“The Dead Romantics” is a novel that defies genre conventions, offering a fresh take on both romance and magic realism. It’s a story that will make you believe in the impossible. And oh do we need that!!!
It’s a celebration of love in all its messy, beautiful forms.
Ashley Poston has created a book, a wonderful debut, that is not only a delight to read but also a reminder that love is the most powerful magic of all. Whether you’re a fan of romance, fantasy, or just a well-told story, “The Dead Romantics” is an absolute must-read.
Spread copies of the book widely 😀!
POV: Those who have had encounters with the supernatural will deeply resonate with this novel, and also feel seen and heard. Let’s make it a natural thing. There’s so much we don’t know and don’t see. Humans can see approximately 0.0035% of the entire electromagnetic spectrum. If we compare the range of the visible spectrum to the full spectrum, the visible light we see is just a tiny fraction of the whole.
Instead of ridiculing those who believe in supernatural occurrences that others may not see or experience (yet 😉), let’s adopt a more open-minded approach. Just because we don’t witness it ourselves doesn’t mean it isn’t real.
Some of my favorite quotes:
“Buying books always made me feel better, even if I never read them.”
“There is no happy ending, theres just. . . happily living. As best you can.”
“This is exhausting, he agreed softly. All of it. Pretending to be okay while the world changes around you and leaves you behind to sit with whatever loss you found.”
“The universe sends you the things you need when you need them.”
“I began to realize that love wasn’t dead, but it wasn’t forever, either. It was something in between, a moment in time where two people existed at the exact same moment in the exact same place in the universe.”
“Love is a celebration,’ ” I read, my voice wobbling, “ ‘of life and death. It stays with you. It lingers, my darlings, long after I’m gone. Listen for me when the wind rushes through the trees. I love you.”
“Everything that dies never really goes. In little ways, it all stays.”
“Everything that dies never really goes. In little ways, it all stays.”
“Because loneliness was the kind of ghost that haunted you long after you were dead. It stood over your plot in the cemetery where a lone name sat carved in marble. It sat with your urn. It was the wind that carried your ashes when no one claimed your body.”
THIS SUMMER WILL BE DIFFERENT by Carley Fortune
(first published: May 9, 2024; Publisher: Forever; 384 pages, Paperback)
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)
(read book: June 11, 2024)
Books writtten by Carley Fortune are warm and gentle embrace, making you feel cozy and safe. I love her work. A true talent.
“This Summer Will Be Different” woven tale that, like in “Meet Me At The Lake”, explores the complexities of love and the courage it takes to embrace new beginnings.
It is a dazzling, emotionally rich novel that, brilliantly combines the charm of a coastal escape with the intricacies of forbidden romance and personal growth. Fortune has created a compelling story that captures the essence of summer love, the pain of heartache, and the courage it takes to follow one’s heart.
This book is a page turner!
Lucy and Felix
The story revolves around Lucy, a young woman who makes annual trips to Prince Edward Island to escape the hustle of her city life. Each visit is a retreat into the idyllic setting of beachside bliss, fresh oysters, and vinho verde, shared with her best friend, Bridget.
However, Lucy’s carefully planned summer takes an unexpected turn when she meets Felix, a local with whom she shares an electrifying, unforgettable night. The only problem? Lucy is unaware that Felix is Bridget’s younger brother, making their connection all the more complicated.
Their chemistry is undeniable and intense, leading to a passionate encounter that neither of them expected. Both Lucy and Felix agree that this should be a one-time thing—an irresistible yet fleeting moment. Yet, year after year, as the summers unfold, their commitment to keeping their distance becomes increasingly challenging.
Fortune skillfully captures the tension and allure between them, making their struggle to stay apart both poignant and palpable.
But this summer will be different: When Bridget abruptly flees Toronto a week before her wedding, Lucy drops everything to support her friend and head back to Prince Edward Island. Lucy’s mission is clear: help Bridget through her crisis while resisting the temptation of Felix, who now seems more captivating and complex than ever. Felix’s once-flirty demeanor has given way to a depth of emotion and vulnerability that Lucy finds herself drawn to, despite her best efforts to maintain control over her heart.
Love, Courage, and Vulnerability
What makes “This Summer Will Be Different” truly exceptional is Fortune’s exploration of themes such as love, personal growth, and the courage to embrace vulnerability. I’m a sucker for these themes.
On a personal note, I felt with Lucy, I wanted to shake her at times, but I also empathized with her internal conflict. And I think that Fortune depicted Lucy’s inner turmoil very beautifully and vividly—her struggle to navigate her feelings for Felix while supporting her friend creates a richly layered narrative that is both heart-wrenching and hopeful, and shows how so often we tend to overthink and stand in our own way of being happy and fulfilled.
Island Magic
Fortune’s portrayal of the island’s stunning landscape adds a magical quality to the story, with the golden sun and soaring red cliffs serving as a backdrop to Lucy’s journey of self-discovery and romance. The setting is almost a character in its own right, enhancing the novel’s atmosphere and reflecting the characters’ emotional states.
The novel truly shines in its portrayal of complex relationships and the surprising connections that can change everything. I found Felix’s journey from a charming local to someone deeply introspective to be incredibly compelling. His character resonated with me on a personal level because it revealed his vulnerability and struggles—qualities that many men have but often keep hidden. When Felix lets his guard down, it’s genuinely touching and showcases a side of him that’s profoundly beautiful. It’s moments like these that make a woman’s heart fall for a character, and Felix’s depth made me fall for him too.
So no wonder Lucy is falling for him more and more. And as her feelings for Felix deepen, she must confront her own fears and desires, challenged to rethink her approach to love and commitment.
This summer is their chance! They are both at a crossroads where they can either flee from love or embrace it wholeheartedly.
I admire Carley Fortune’s writing which is infused with so much warmth and authenticity. It’s so beautiful!
“This Summer Will Be Different” is a truly captivating read that is both touching and exhilarating, and deserves 5 out of 5 stars!!!
The dialogue sparkles with wit, the romance is portrayed with intensity and tenderness, and the setting is evoked with lush, evocative detail.
It’s a stunning story of love, self-discovery, the magic of new beginnings and the bravery required to follow one’s heart. I never get tired of these types of novels. Even though they are predictable, but of course, that’s why we’re reading them, right? 😉
POV: I’m eagerly anticipating her upcoming book. I still need to read her debut, “Every Summer After,” but I’m excited for her new book whenever it comes out. I’ll definitely be one of the first to dive into it! and you’ll definitely read abou it here on Lost In Pages!
Some of my favorite quotes:
“Sometimes I worry that as I’ve got older, I’ve shrunk my world instead of making it grow.”
“I’ve waited so long for this.
You feel so fucking right.”“I’ve been burned in the past, which you know. I rebuilt my life once. I can’t rebuild it again. I make sure I get things right at the first time. Going slow is good for me, too.”
“Books and seeds felt like our secret language. Something just for us.”
“There’s a reason we keep coming back to each other. We can come back to each other again.”
“Live your life for you, and no one else”
“Opportunities don’t fall in your lap because you want them to. You have to work to make them happen.”
“It’s the kind of night where I can feel something lock into place. This is it, I think. This is everything I want.”
“”Are you a fan of talking on the phone?” – “I’m a fan of listening to your voice.””

Emma and Her One True Loves
The premise alone is enough to pull you in!
The story begins with Emma Blair, a young woman who marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse, after they both escape their small Massachusetts hometown to travel the world. Their life together is an adventure filled with love, excitement, and the thrill of exploring new places. Both are perfect for each other!
But everything changes on their first wedding anniversary when Jesse, on an assignment as a travel journalist, goes missing in a helicopter crash over the Pacific Ocean. Emma’s world is shattered, and she’s left to navigate the overwhelming grief of losing the man she thought she would spend the rest of her life with.
As the years pass, Emma slowly pieces her life back together, returning to her hometown and taking over her parents’ bookstore. It’s here that she reconnects with Sam, an old friend from her past who was always a kind and steady presence in her life. With Sam’s support, Emma begins to heal and eventually falls in love again, finding comfort in the stability and warmth he offers. Just as Emma and Sam become engaged and begin planning their future together, Emma receives a phone call that turns her world upside down: Jesse is alive.
The revelation that Jesse has survived, stranded on a remote island for years, plunges Emma into a whirlwind of emotions. Oh, just imagine that!
Suddenly, she is faced with an impossible choice between two great loves. Jesse, her first love, represents the life they built together and the dreams they shared. Sam, her current love, represents the new life she’s created, one rooted in healing, growth, and the promise of a future that feels safe and secure.
As Emma grapples with this unimaginable decision, Reid masterfully explores the themes of love, identity, and what it means to truly move on. I guess that’s why I admire Taylor Jenkins Reid so much: she is undeniably a genius in the way she infuses raw emotion and vulnerability into her work.
More than just a Choice
Emma’s journey is not just about choosing between two men—it’s about rediscovering who she is and what she wants out of life. The novel takes readers deep into Emma’s internal struggle as she weighs her love for Jesse against the life she’s built with Sam. The tension is palpable as Emma’s emotions swing between the past and the future, each page pulling you deeper into her heart-wrenching dilemma.
Reid doesn’t shy away from the complexities of Emma’s situation—no she goes right into it—, offering no easy answers. Because there is none!!! As a reader you will be challenged a lot.
Reid presents a nuanced portrayal of love in all its forms—passionate, enduring, comforting, and, at times, conflicting.
The novel’s emotional climax comes as Emma makes her choice, a decision that is both inevitable and deeply satisfying. Without giving away too much, it’s a choice that reflects the growth and self-awareness that Emma gains throughout the story, leaving readers with a profound sense of closure.
And personally, I would’ve chosen the same!
A Must Read
“One True Loves” is a deeply moving novel that will make you question what it means to love and be loved, and whether it’s possible to have more than one true love in a lifetime. Taylor Jenkins Reid has crafted a story that is as much about self-discovery as it is about romance, with characters who feel real and a plot that keeps you hooked until the very last page. It’s a book that will break your heart and then gently put it back together, reminding you that love, in all its forms, is always worth fighting for.
This story strongly reminded me of the movie Cast Away with Tom Hanks, but narrated from the perspective of the one left behind. Absolutely brilliant!
Some of My Favorite Quotes:
“True love doesn’t always last,” I say. “It doesn’t always have to be for a lifetime”
“We are two people who are madly in love with our old selves. And that is not the same as being in love.”
“What else could you want in a person other than kindness and humor? I’m not sure anything else really matters to me.”
“Flirting is probably just as much about falling in love with yourself as it is with someone else. It’s about seeing yourself through someone’s eyes and realizing there is plenty to like about yourself, plenty of reasons someone might hang on your every word.”
“Good things don’t wait until you’re ready. Sometimes they come right before, when you’re almost there. And I figured when that happens, you can let them pass by like a bus not meant for you. Or you can get ready. So I got ready.”
“It’s a scary thought, isn’t it? That every single person on this planet could lose their one true love and live to love again? It means the one you love could love again if they lost you.”
“They say that when you remember something, you are really remembering the last time you remembered it. Each time you recollect a memory, you change it, ever so slightly, shading it with new information, new feelings.”
“”We loved each other and we lost each other. And now, even though we still love each other, the pieces don’t fit like they used to.” I could make myself fit for him. He could make himself fit for me. But that’s not true love.”
NOT IN LOVE by Ali Hazelwood
(first published: June 11, 2024; Publisher: Forever; 384 pages, Paperback)
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5)
(read book: June 26, 2024)
A new Hazelwood? I’m all in! So I went to my favorite English bookstore and I bought myself a copy of the book on its release day. I dove right into it.
POV: It is really hard for me to write this. If you’ve read my other Lost In Pages blog posts you know that I’m a fan of Ali Hazelwood. But this time I was not in love with her novel. I don’t even know what to write since I don’t want to come across as mean. I think for a lot of people, this novel worked just fine. And I, too, was super excited about Hazelwood’s first erotic novel. However, while the premise was promising and the writing had its moments for sure because: Hazelwood!, the execution didn’t fully capture the emotional connection I was looking for.
Ali Hazelwood’s Not in Love marks her venture into erotic romance, and I was so excited for this one! She brings readers a steamy tale of forbidden attraction and high-stakes business. While the novel has garnered positive feedback from many, my own experience was unfortunately less satisfying. Here’s a closer look at the story and why it didn’t quite resonate with me.
Rue and Eli: A Dysfunctional Relationship
Rue Siebert is a biotech engineer at Kline, a start-up making waves in food science. Rue has built a life she’s proud of, complete with financial stability, a close-knit group of friends, and a successful career. But she’s got a lot of trauma to heal from, and things to work through which make her very avoidant of letting people into her life.
Her world is upended when Kline becomes the target of a seemingly hostile takeover led by the irresistibly charming Eli Killgore. Eli, with his magnetic presence and relentless determination, wants to acquire Kline for reasons that are deeply personal, which the reader will find out in the end and also why he’s not the bad guy in this whole drama.
As Eli pushes forward with the takeover, his attention is captivated by Rue—an attraction that is both irresistible and problematic. Their chemistry is irresistable. Despite that, Rue is determined to keep things professional and avoid mixing business with pleasure.
However, the allure between them is undeniable, and soon, their relationship shifts from tension-filled meetings to a secret, no-strings-attached affair. With their futures tied to the fate of their companies, their romance comes with a built-in expiration date: the day one of them emerges victorious in the business battle.
And here’s what I didn’t like:
It’s not the sex scenes. It’s the dysfuncationality. Quite a few sex scenes—and there were a lot, a lot which is to be expected from an erotic novel—seemed very rough and actually quite stressing. I’m not against sex scenes in novels at all, I truly enjoy them, I love them!, but when they turn out to be somewhat on the edge of being unhealthy and trauma-filled, it’s just not my cup of tea.
That’s why I had to take a break from reading it and turned to another book. It took me two weeks to complete this novel because it didn’t captivate me.
Hazelwood’s attempt to blend romance with corporate drama offers some engaging moments, but the novel fell short of my expectations. The chemistry between Rue and Eli is certainly palpable in some way, and their steamy encounters are described with vivid detail which is actually pretty amazing.
And yet, the story struggled to maintain a balance between its erotic elements and the emotional depth I was hoping for. The characters, while very intriguing (because of their dysfunctional behavoir), felt somewhat superficial, and the plot’s focus on the business conflict sometimes overshadowed the development of their relationship.
Some would argue that it is a healing story which I agree it is, but some of it was a bit too disturbing in the way that it was not
But that’s just my impression. All in all it was still an interesting read and Hazelwood truly is a hell of a writer. And I still love her. But just not in love with “Not In Love”!
Some of My Favorite Quotes:
“Your damn mouth,” he murmured, “is the most obscenely lovely thing I’ve ever had the burden of seeing.”
“Out of all the people I’ve met, the things I’ve wanted, the places I’ve been, none has ever felt as necessary as you do. Because I love you. I love you in a way I didn’t think I was capable of. I love you because you showed me how to fall in love. And I don’t regret it, Rue. I wouldn’t want it any other way. Even if you can never say it back. Even if you never think about me again after today. Even if you were right after all, and you’re not capable of love.”
“Do you think that maybe there’s another version of us, somewhere in another timeline? Where we’re not just a messed-up lump of scar tissue, and we’re whole enough to be capable of loving others the way they want to be loved?”
