Sound Healing: 3 Tools For Supporting Your Nervous System

sound healing and the nervous system

One of my passions is talking and learning about the nervous system (if you haven’t noticed yet 😉). Another deep passion of mine is sound healing, and there’s a reason why: I have always been fascinated by sound, frequencies, and vibration.
My fascination with sound isn’t just academic. I’ve felt, firsthand, how sound can either nourish and serve as an agent for soothing our wellbeing or overwhelm the nervous system.

Modern life is filled with disruptive, often harmful noise. We talk about air and environmental pollution, even light pollution, but sound pollution is just as invasive. It seeps into our bodies, often unnoticed.

Back in uni, when I studied Music Production, I wrote a paper on this very topic. It was during that time that I deep-dived into the works of Gregg Braden, Bruce Lipton, and Dr. Emoto’s groundbreaking research on water. (Please check them all out if you haven’t yet!)

Living in Berlin, I felt the toll of the big city’s constant noise overload—construction everywhere, ambulance sirens wailing at all hours, endless traffic, partygoers, people shouting in the streets, noisy neighbors, and techno blasting from nearly every corner—an unceasing symphony of chaos. Let’s just say my term paper on the subject wasn’t exactly well received back then.

Personally, because I was always attuned to sound, I sought ways to use sound for balance rather than stress. Using white noise for better sleep for instance. That’s when I really started to dive into sound healing, and I felt something dormant was activated in me. Oh, how I often wish there had been university programs dedicated to sound studies and sound healing.

The more I explored, the more I realized that sound isn’t just something we hear—it’s something we feel. It shapes our moods, our health, and our entire state of being. And you know what? The best part is: we can harness it intentionally. Sound can either be noise or true medicine. While some—or let’s be very realistic here—most sounds are unavoidable, we can make deliberate choices about the ones we invite into our lives.

Because here’s the thing:
Your body responds to sound in ways you may not realize. The vibrations affect your nervous system, influencing your stress levels, your emotions, and your overall wellbeing. So, when you learn to use sound intentionally, you can support your body’s natural ability to relax, heal, and regain equilibrium.

How Sound Affects Your Nervous System

Your nervous system is constantly reacting to external stimuli. Sound is one of the most powerful influences. Certain frequencies can calm your mind, ease muscle tension, and shift your emotional state.

  • Sound waves stimulate the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in regulating stress and relaxation.
  • Different frequencies influence brainwave activity, helping you transition into calm states.
  • Your body naturally resonates with sound, affecting heart rate, breath, and nervous system responses.

Have you ever noticed how a song can instantly lift your mood? Or how loud noises can trigger anxiety? Sound impacts you on a deep level, often without conscious awareness. By making intentional choices, you can use sound to regulate and relax your nervous system.

Here are some…

Practical Ways to Use Sound for Healing

1. Listening to Calming Frequencies

Not all sounds affect the body in the same way. Some frequencies have been found to promote relaxation and healing.

  • Binaural beats encourage relaxation by synchronizing brainwaves to specific frequencies.
  • 432 Hz and 528 Hz are often linked to reduced stress and emotional balance.
Just search for their effects on water—you’ll be mesmerized. Or better yet, dive into cymatic experiments. I won’t go too deep into it here—do your own deep dive and be forever changed.
  • White noise or nature sounds can help soothe an overstimulated mind and improve focus.
There are so many great devices and apps available nowadays—try one and feel the difference! (As I’m typing this, I’m actually listening to white noise—keeps me focused. 😊)

I recommend exploring different frequencies and noticing how your body responds. Some may feel grounding, while others can energize or calm you. And of course, nothing compares to being in nature—undisturbed, immersed in its rich symphony of sounds. Simply unmatched!

2. Sound Baths

Sound baths use instruments that create deep, resonant vibrations. These vibrations help release tension and promote a sense of calm and relaxation.

  • Singing bowls, gongs, and chimes produce frequencies that relax the body and mind.
  • Many people experience improved sleep, reduced muscle tension, and emotional release after a session.
  • Sound baths can be done in person or through recordings if an in-person session isn’t available.

Even a few minutes of listening to harmonic sounds can shift your state of mind.

3. Singing and Vocal Toning

As a singer and vocal coach, I can personally attest to the transformative power of vocal toning. Your own voice is one of the most powerful sound healing tools you have—completely free, uniquely yours, and always available. Once you start exploring your voice, you might just be mesmerized by its depth, resonance, and healing potential.

Try this:

  • Humming or chanting for stimulating the vagus nerve and slowing your heart rate.
  • Singing for more breath control, which supports relaxation and emotional expression.
  • Toning specific sounds for creating soothing vibrations in the body, releasing built-up tension.

You don’t need to be a singer to benefit from vocal toning. Everyone can tone. Simply allow your voice to express what your body is holding and you’ll see how deeply healing it can be.

I also recorded an episode on why you should consider starting singing—be sure to check it out! Here’s the link.

How to Integrate Sound Healing into Your Life

Sound healing doesn’t require expensive equipment or lengthy practices. Small changes can make a big difference in how you feel.

  • Start your day with a few minutes of calming music or healing frequencies.
  • Hum or sing when you feel stressed to release tension and regulate your breath.
  • Use a sound bath recording before bed to improve sleep quality.
  • Experiment with different frequencies to find what feels best for you. (There are so many different apps available to choose from)

The key is to be intentional. Pay attention to how sound affects your body and mind. What works for one person may not work for another, so explore different sounds and techniques to find what resonates with you. We are all sound beings. 🙂

Questions to Consider

  • Have you noticed how different sounds affect your mood?
  • What happens in your body when you listen to calming music?
  • And what about when you listen to, say, death metal? (I know, I know—it’s a huge contrast! Everyone has their personal preferences, but I want to refer to Dr. Emoto’s research on water and how sound influences its structure. Since we are over 70% water, it makes sense that our bodies might respond in a similar way.)
  • Could incorporating sound healing into your routine help you restore equilibrium?

Your nervous system responds not only to everything you hear but also to what you cannot hear. Yes, even that. We’re constantly bombarded with noise pollution, often without realizing it. So give yourself permission to step away from the chaos. By consciously choosing the right sounds, you can create an environment that nurtures relaxation, emotional release, and overall well-being.

Pay attention to how your body reacts—and make sound a tool for healing in your life.
