The Call to Your Wild Heart: Why Reclaiming Your Wilderness is Essential

Wild heart

Dear wild heart, in the rush of daily life, it’s easy to lose sight of the deeper parts of ourselves—the wild, instinctive, and untamed aspects of our nature that are too often suppressed or ignored. I know this firsthand, which is why I felt a deep pull when I first encountered two books that deeply impacted and changed me; they reignited something within me: If Women Rose Rooted by Sharon Blackie and Women Who Run With The Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés.

These books, filled with rich storytelling and profound wisdom, opened my eyes to the untapped wilderness within every woman—an inner realm of power, intuition, and freedom that modern society often tries to tame. I often return to them as a lifeline when I’ve lost my way, when I feel disconnected or out of touch with the wild woman within me. In those moments, they remind me to listen to the whispers and signs that are always present, waiting for me to reclaim my true essence all over again.

As I read first Women Who Run With The Wolves and then If Women Rose Rooted, everytime I began to feel a stirring—a call to return to something ancient and vital, something that only a woman can understand. It’s that part of us that is so primal and mystical, that is the portal to another real, to our truest essence, to our wild heart.

The call to reconnect with the rhythms of the earth and the wilderness of our bodies, the same wilderness that was once our birthright. This call isn’t just a whisper—it’s a profound invitation to reclaim our true selves, to shed the layers of who we thought we were, and to step into the fullness of who we were always meant to be, even in the face of losing everything, only to be reborn anew.

This is the call to return to your wilderness, and it’s one that you need to answer.

Wild heart, wilderness

The Wilderness Within: A Return to Your True Self

Within every woman lies a wilderness—an untamed space untouched by the layers of who you thought you were. It’s the part of you that is primal, intuitive, and deeply in tune with the rhythms of the Earth. It’s the wild woman, the untamed soul, that remembers ancient ways of living in harmony with nature, of feeling deeply, and of expressing yourself without fear of judgment.

Somewhere along the way, many of us have been taught to suppress this wildness. We’ve been told to fit into neat, controlled boxes, to conform to societal expectations, and to silence our instincts in favor of logic, order, and predictability. Yet, the wilderness within you never truly disappears. It simply waits. It waits for the moment when you are ready to listen—to answer the call to return to your true, wild self.

Another book that deeply inspired me was The Sophia Code by Kaia Ra, particularly the chapter on Quan Yin. I won’t go into too much detail here because I want you to pick up a copy of the book and dive into Quan Yin’s story yourself. But I will say this—her journey has stayed with me. In her story, she’s forced to return to her primal wilderness, to the scariest, rawest parts of herself, after witnessing the horrific massacre of her entire village. The trauma from surviving this event drove her to withdraw from civilization entirely, retreating into the deepest forest to live like a wild animal.

There’s so much more to her story that deeply moved and inspired me, and it resonates so much with what I’m writing here. Quan Yin’s journey is a reminder that we all carry that wild, primal part within us—a part that we can return to whenever we hear the call we’ve lost sight of.

Rewilding: The Journey Back to Your Essence

When I started therapy in my early twenties, I felt like something was wrong with me—like somehow, I was the problem. I had episodes of anxiety attacks, especially when I was alone. I felt depressed, and while there were multiple reasons for this, one of the core struggles was that I didn’t know how to express myself and be seen for who I truly was. I could feel the anger and frustration building up inside of me, something stirring deep within, but without understanding what it was, I labeled it as bad and shameful. In truth, it was her call—the call of the wild woman, the wild heart that refuses to be tamed.

And gosh, I tamed it. I silenced it. And this repression showed up in my relationships, not just my romantic relationship, but also in my friendships. The repercussions of not tapping into that wilderness were mirrored back to me in the feeling of being deeply unheard and unseen in my relationship with my then-partner. I was completely lost. And that was the beginning of a long journey of deeper healing.

Why am I sharing this? Because this is what happens when we lose ourselves—whether in relationships, the expectations of others, or the weight of societal norms. When we lose sight of who we truly are, the wild woman first gently knocks on the door. She gives us subtle warning signs through dreams, feelings, and instinct. If we don’t answer the call, she grows frustrated. She will go wild—some might call it crazy or insane—but this is the part of us that is calling us back to our essence.

This is the process of rewilding.

Rewilding is the journey back to your truest, most authentic self. It’s about shedding the layers of conditioning that no longer serve you and embracing the fullness of who you are. This journey isn’t about rejecting society or abandoning modern life or your relationships—even though it could also meant that—, it’s about finding balance. It’s about returning to nature’s rhythms and reconnecting with the parts of you that have been buried beneath the noise and distractions of everyday life. And I guaranty you that almost every woman has experienced it on one level.

Rewilding isn’t just an intellectual exercise—quite far from it—, it’s a physical, emotional, and spiritual practice. It requires you to be brave to go into the deepest of oceans of your psyche, knowing that when you enter this realm, you will not come back as the same person. It can scare you away even, so deep it will take you.

But rewilding is also about listening to your body’s wisdom, trusting your instincts, and finding freedom in embracing your full range of human experience, especially as the woman you are. From joy to sorrow, from strength to vulnerability, rewilding is a deep transformative process that is ignited through a deep, inner call.
It invites you to live fully, unapologetically, and in tune with the wild, sacred energy that flows through you. And yes, it can be quite daunting to say the least.

The Power of Belonging

Oh, this is a huge one, and honestly, it’s worth a blog article of its own! Belonging is so much more than just a feeling; it’s a deeply rooted truth we can only experience when we feel fully seen, heard, and loved. And even in those moments when we are not seen, heard, loved, or liked by others, we know that their judgment can never disrupt the sense of belonging we carry deep within.

This belonging transcends relationships. It’s a knowing, intimately tied to our inner worthiness and the understanding that, even as flawed human beings, we always belong. We belong to this world, to ourselves, to our soul.

When we feel this kind of belonging, the weight of our problems and struggles feels lighter, more manageable. We’re better equipped to navigate the complexities of our inner world because we stand rooted in something unshakable.

But here’s the thing: so many women feel “less than,” “not enough,” or even “too much” because they don’t feel they truly belong—to themselves or to this world. And how could they, when they’ve never been shown how to explore the richness of their own psyche, the deepest layers of their being?

When we answer the call to return to our wilderness, we awaken a profound sense of belonging that goes far beyond what we feel in connection with others. This is not about being accepted or loved by someone else—it’s about coming home to ourselves. It’s in this homecoming that we rediscover where we truly belong: not just to a community or a place (which of course are both important, too), but to the very fabric of life itself.

We realize we are not separate from nature—we are nature. We are intimately connected to the cycles of the seasons, the pulse of the Earth, and the deep, innate wisdom that flows through every living being.

It’s in this return to our wild selves that we experience true belonging—not because we conform, but because we embrace exactly who we are meant to be. We belong to the world in all its messiness, its beauty, its chaos, and its calm. And when we stand in this truth, we find a peace that doesn’t come from fitting in but from the freedom of being fully and unapologetically ourselves.

Why You Need to Answer the Call

You need to answer the call to your wilderness and follow this beautiful, wild heart of yours because the world needs you to be you. The more you hide behind layers of who you think you should be, the more disconnected you become from your true power. The wilderness within you is not something to fear—even though going there can feel pretty scary—it is the source of your greatest strength, creativity, and joy, and everything depends on it!

Answering the call means listening to your intuition, trusting the pull of your heart, and finding the courage to show up as your authentic self. It means embracing the wild, messy, beautiful journey of transformation, stepping into the unknown and deepest waters—of shedding the parts of you that no longer serve, and embracing the wildness of your body, soul, mind, and heart.

When you answer this call, you reconnect with your essence. You find your voice, your true voice. You find your power. And you find your place in this vast, beautiful world.

How to Start Your Journey Back to Your Wilderness

  • Reconnect with Nature: Spend time outdoors, feel the earth beneath your feet, listen to the wind, and soak in the rhythm of the natural world. Nature is a mirror of your own wildness—it will remind you that you are nature.
  • Listen to Your Body: Your body is your most primal, intuitive guide. Pay attention to its signals, honor its needs, and trust its wisdom.
  • Move Wildly: Dance, run, stretch—move in ways that feel free and natural to you. Let your body express itself without restraint.
  • Let Go of What Doesn’t Serve You: Shed the layers of who you thought you should be—whether they’re expectations, old wounds, or beliefs that no longer align with your truth.
  • Embrace Your Sensuality: Connect with all of your senses. Taste, touch, smell, see, and hear the world around you with heightened awareness. This is part of your wildness.
  • Follow Your Intuition: Trust the whispers of your inner knowing. Your instincts are there to guide you back to your wild nature.

And as you take these steps, consider seeking guidance along the way. A therapist, coach, or mentor can be a powerful ally in navigating the complexities of this journey. Dive into the books that millions of women across the world have embraced—works that illuminate the path back to your wildness.
